An independent poll shows that President Obama would easily defeat any of his four Republican challengers in Wisconsin. According to the Marquette Law School’s new poll, 716 registered voters preferred Obama to former Pennsylvania Senate Republican Rick Santorum 51-to-40 percent. Also, Obama out-polled former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney 53-to-38. The president had 52-36 lead over Texas Congressman Ron Paul. And Obama had his widest lead, 56-to-33, over former G-O-P House Speaker Newt Gingrich. The Marquette poll also found that Santorum has the early edge in the Wisconsin presidential primary on April third. Among those planning to vote in the G-O-P primary, 34-percent chose Santorum to 18-percent for Romney, 17-percent for Paul, and 12-percent for Gingrich. The poll also gave Obama a 50-percent approval rating. 43-percent said they disapproved of the president’s job performance. The respondents were surveyed by phone last Thursday through Sunday. The margin of error is three-point-seven percent either way.

MADISON (Press Release) – The deer hunting seasons might still be months away, but the Department of Natural Resources is already gearing up with a series of deer hunter forums in March. Anyone interested in the opportunity to discuss local deer management issues, hunting seasons, and any other deer topic is encouraged to attend.
Wisconsin has long been known as one of the most publicly-driven deer management programs in the country. And in recent years, thousands of volunteers have gotten involved in deer research projects providing data to estimate the size of the herd and sharing personal observations about hunting success, season structure, and the herd itself.
The March deer hunter forums will put the public in direct contact with the local biologist responsible for managing the local deer herd, and are intended to both share information about deer management and gather information from hunters about deer where they live, hunt or farm.
The format of meetings will vary, but in many cases the local wildlife biologist will provide a brief presentation followed by a question and answer period. Some meetings may also have an open house format, allowing attendees to stop in anytime during the scheduled time.
Everyone interested is encouraged to attend the meetings that cover deer management in areas where they hunt or live, but are also welcome to attend any of the meetings.

Here are the details:
The Milwaukee Bucks will play their final game before the All-Star break tonight, when they face the Bulls in Chicago. The Bucks are six games below .500 and they’ve lost eight-of-their-last-11. One thing they have not been able to do is to make clutch plays at the end. Milwaukee has lost four games by five points or less in the past couple weeks. On Monday night, the Bucks blew a two-point lead with 30 seconds to go when they fell to Orlando at home, 93-90. Coach Scott Skiles says he’s looking for somebody to step up and make plays late, and to score baskets at the end — both of which have been downfalls for the Bucks. Some players have admitted having late tensions. They missed their last 11 shots in losing at Orlando last Friday night.
The U-W Green Bay men’s basketball team won its third straight game last night, 71-to-67 at home over Cleveland State. The Phoenix were trailing by two points with 4:10 left when they went on a 9-to-2 run and held on from there. Kam Cerroni led Green Bay with 17 points. He was the Horizon
League’s three-point leader at 46-percent coming in — and he hit 5-of-8 from downtown against the Vikings. Freshman Anton Grady had 23 points and eight rebounds for Cleveland State, which has lost five straight and fell to 20-and-9 overall. The Vikings fell into a tie for third place in the league at 10-and-6, as Valparaiso clinched the season title with a win last evening. Green Bay is now 8-and-8, and it moved to within one game of Milwaukee and Youngstown State for the right to host a game in next week’s conference tournament. The Phoenix have won six-of-their-last-eight, and are now 13-and-14 overall. They closed out their regular season home schedule at 12-and-2. Green Bay plays at Loyola of Chicago tomorrow night. Tonight, the 10th-ranked Marquette men will host Rutgers.
The Marquette women shot only 37-percent last night in losing at Cincinnati 60-to-46. The Bearcats shot 47-percent as they jumped out to a 17-point halftime lead. Marquette ended the game with a 7-to-1 run. But it was not nearly enough, as the Golden Eagles dropped to 4-and-10 in the Big East and 13-and-14 overall. Freshman Chelsie Butler led Marquette with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Four Cincinnati players scored in double figures, led by Bjonee Reaves with 15 — which came on five three-pointers. The Bearcats improved to 6-and-8 in the conference and 15-and-12 overall. Marquette will play its home season finale on Saturday against Connecticut.
U-W Whitewater and River Falls won their first-round games last night in the W-I-A-C women’s basketball tournament. Third-seeded Whitewater eliminated Superior at home, 92-to-55. Mary Merg scored 18 points as Whitewater out-shot the Yellowjackets 52-to-36 percent. Fourth-seededRiver Falls advanced with a 64-to-55 home victory over Number-five La
Crosse. Four River Falls players scored in double figures, led by Alise Holst with 18. And the Falcons out-rebounded La Crosse 44-34. The semi-finals are now set for tomorrow night. River Falls will play at top-seeded Stevens Point, and Whitewater heads to second-seeded Eau Claire. The W-I-A-C men’s tournament begins tonight with a pair of first-round games. Third-seeded Stevens Point hosts Superior, and Number-four Platteville is at home against La Crosse.
There was a mild upset last night in the quarter-finals of the Northern Athletics Conference men’s tournament. Fifth-seeded Lakeland won at Number-four Concordia-Chicago 68-to-62. Justin Ward had 24 points and 10 rebounds for Lakeland. Top-seeded Concordia-Mequon elimianted Marian at home, 73-to-66, as the Falcons out-shot Marian 55-to-35 percent. Number-two Benedictine won at home over Aurora 86-83. Nate Green scored 27 for Benedictine. And third-seeded Madison Edgewood eliminated Rockford at home, 94-to-84. Ben Wisniewski scored 24 for Edgewood. The semi-finals will be played tomorrow night. Concordia-Mequon hosts Lakeland, and Edgewood is at Benedictine. The N-A-C women’s tournament opens tonight. Top-seeded Wisconsin Lutheran hosts Benedictine. Number-two Dominican entertains Marian. Third-seeded Milwaukee Engineering hosts Concordia-Chicago. And Number-four Lakeland is at home against Concordia-Mequon.
Milwaukee Brewers’ starters Zack Greinke and Shaun Marcum will both become free agents at the end of the year. And general manager Doug Melvin says it’s too early to tell if the Brewers will be able to keep both pitchers for 2013-and-beyond. Greinke does not have an agent, and he says he won’t need one for awhile. But Melvin said he’ll still make an offer to Greinke when he feels the time is right. He believes Greinke will do a lot of the preparation work himself, and he might get somebody to help if the talks get serious. The 28-year-old Greinke is making 13-and-a-half million dollars this year — and pitchers of his caliber have been getting five-year deals in the 75-to-85-million dollar range. The Brewers traded a lot of their top minor league talent to get Greinke and Marcum a year ago — and it appears they’ll want to keep both if they can. Marcum has said he wants to stay with the Brewers after this season.
The N-F-L Scouting Combine begins today in Indianapolis, and it’s a lot more than just draft prospects running 40-yard dashes and taking Wonderlic tests. Over 900 player agents will attend a mandatory meeting on Friday held by the players’ union. And Green Bay Packers’ chief negotiator Russ Ball and G-M Ted Thompson will spend time with some of those agents on the team’s most pressing needs going into free agency. Among other things, the Packers expect to keep negotiating a new deal for tight end Jermichael Finley to try and avoid using the franchise tag on him. They’ll also try to get closer to deals with center Scott Wells and special teams’ standout Jarrett Bush. Thompson might also test the free-agent waters for a center in case Wells leaves — and he might see if he can get something for free agent quarterback Matt Flynn, who’s expected to try-and-become a starter someplace else this fall.

BARRON COUNTY – The Rice Lake Police Department is currently investigating numerous reports of theft/fraud that have occurred in the City of Rice Lake and the local area over the past several months. The incidents involve a suspect, Sean K Davis, 41 of Cameron, allegedly scamming several area businesses out of money after promising a product delivery or some type of service where Davis was collecting donations for various charity events. Any person or entities having contact with Sean K. Davis in a similar scheme, please contact the Rice Lake Police Department at 715-234-2116.
(WEAU) – The Barron County Sheriff’s Department says its latest round of alcohol age compliance checks saw a 13% failure rate.
Deputies say out of 15 Barron County outlets checks, 2 sold alcohol to an 18-year-old high school student. Sheriff Chris Fitzgerald says the numbers show there’s plenty of work still to be done, and he encourages employers to make sure their employees know how to properly check an ID.

A Freshman makes video of her 12 year old friend
Posted in: News | Comments Off
WEAU – A new video about a 12-year-old girl who died is showing up on Facebook. The friend who made it says she wants to honor her friend while trying to stop bullying.
The Rusk County Sheriff’s Department says early Sunday morning Payton Ruth Ann Richardson died at her grandparent’s home south of Ladysmith from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Al Brown, the Chetek-Weyerhauser School District Superintendent, says there weren’t any signs she was bullied at school. However friends and family of Payton say that’s not the case.
The freshman who made the video for Payton says they didn’t go to the same school, but were close friends outside of the classroom. She says she sees bullying a lot and that’s why she felt she needed to do something. In less than a day her video has more than a thousand views with the focus of remembering her friend while putting a stop to bullying.
“Payton was a talented girl and didn’t deserve anything that happened to her,” says Kim Towne.
The 14-year-old says she knows her friend was bullied and says it’s a problem a lot of kids deal with in school.
“People do get bullied and it’s not fun to get bullied. I know from experience,” says Towne.
“It kills me to know a young girl at that age didn’t know what to do and thought the only way to do what she could do is hurt herself,” says Kim’s mom Alicia Lee.
Lee says the video her daughter made touched her heart. She says parents need to keep an eye out for the signs of bullying. She says she’s seen them in her kids and hopes all kids know where to find help.
“That’s the most important thing children need to know their parents or anyone is there to help them though any situation,” says Lee.
After being shared on sites like Facebook and YouTube Kim says it’s already making a difference.
“A kid messaged my friend telling her that he was a bully and after he saw it, it gave him a different perspective. He realized bullying can hurt people and he doesn’t want to do it anymore,” says Towne.
Payton’s grandmother said the family is devastated and they didn’t see this coming for their loveable girl. She says they’ve been told people were calling their granddaughter ugly. She says Payton held everything inside and didn’t talk about the bullying, but she believes she was a victim and that the family has seen it first-hand on Facebook even after Payton died.
A visitation for Payton will be held tonight.
The Chetek-Weyerhauser Superintendent says the district is having a community meeting about suicide prevention tonight at seven in the school library.
If you or someone you know is having suicidal thoughts, you can call this national suicide prevention hotline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255).

Gov. Walker ill will not meet the President
Posted in: News | Comments Off
MADISON, Wis. (AP) — In a change of plans, Gov. Scott Walker will not be accompanying President Barack Obama on a visit to Master Lock in Milwaukee.
Walker’s spokesman Cullen Werwie said Wednesday that the Republican governor is recovering from a “nasty case of the flu” and is canceling his plans to be with the president at the padlock maker.
However, Walker does plan to follow through with plans to greet the president upon his arrival at the airport in Milwaukee.
Obama’s visit to Milwaukee is his first to Wisconsin in more than a year. Walker has been attempting to tie his fate in a probably recall election with Obama’s chances of winning Wisconsin in November.
Walker said in a Tuesday message on Twitter that he was sick with an upset stomach.

President to visit Wisconsin today
Posted in: News | Comments Off
WHEELER – President Obama will visit Milwaukee’s Master Lock factory today, and he’ll encourage other U-S industries to do what Master Lock did – bring back jobs they once exported. Obama has praised Master Lock a number of times in the past year, after the firm brought 100 jobs from China back to Milwaukee. In remarks prepared for his Milwaukee visit, Obama says now is quote, “an excellent opportunity to bring manufacturing back – but we have to seize it.” He’ll ask business leaders to consider what they can do bring jobs back to America and quote, “Your country will do everything we can to help you succeed.” For the president, it’s the start of a three-day campaign fund-raising trip that will begin in earnest tonight in Los Angeles. But Obama clearly hopes to score some political points in Wisconsin. He won by 14 points here in 2008, but he has a more difficult challenge this time after Republicans assumed the majority in 2010 in both the State Capitol and the state’s congressional delegation.

Here are the details:
The Milwaukee Bucks have dropped to one-and-a-half games out of playoff contention. The New York Knicks expanded their lead over Milwaukee for the final Eastern Conference playoff spot with a 90-to-87 come-from-behind win at Toronto last night. The Bucks were idle, and they’ll host New Orleans this evening. Milwaukee is 12-and-16 after losing four straight home games – their longest losing streak at the Bradley Center in over two years. New York got its victory at Toronto on a three-pointer by Jeremy Lin with five-tenths-of-a-second left. The Knicks have won six straight, and they’re above .500 for the first time since January 12th.
Meanwhile, Bucks’ center Andrew Bogut says he still hopes to play this season. He broke his left ankle at Houston on January 25th – and he says a lot will be determined by the results of an ankle scan to be performed next week. Surgery might be ordered, but Bogut says he hopes to avoid it. All the swelling is gone, and Bogut says he’s working out every other day – but he doesn’t leave his house because he doesn’t want to walk on the bad ankle unless he really has to.
Tony Meier hit a pair of free throws with one-point-one seconds left to give U-W Milwaukee an 86-to-84 home win over Cleveland State last night. The Panthers had the edge at the free-throw line, making 33-of-40 while the Vikings hit just 20-of-24. Cleveland State lost despite shooting 61-percent from the floor. They dropped to 12-and-4 in the Horizon League, as their title hopes diminished. Valparaiso holds a tie-breaker over Cleveland State, and Valpo can clinch first place with a win over Loyola next Tuesday. Milwaukee’s win kept the Panthers on track to host a home game in the upcoming conference tournament. James Haarsma had 25 points for U-W-M, which improved to 9-and-7 in the Horizon League and 16-and-12 overall. Charlie Lee scored 14 for Cleveland State, which dropped to 20-and-7 overall. Milwaukee’s next game is on Saturday at home against Fairfield as part of E-S-P-N’s Bracket Buster series.
The U-W Green Bay men shot 61-percent in the second half last night to beat Youngstown State at home, 71-to-65. Brennan Cougill had 17 points and 11 rebounds for the Phoenix, while his freshman teammate Keifer Sykes had 17 points and 10 assists. Green Bay shot 44-percent on the night, improving to 7-and-8 in the Horizon League and 11-and-14 overall. Blake Allen scored 23 for Youngstown State, which dropped to 9-and-7 in the conference and 14-and-12 overall. Green Bay will host Eastern Michigan on Saturday in the Bracket Buster event.
The Marquette women’s basketball team lost to South Florida last night, 61-to-48 in Milwaukee. The Golden Eagles trailed by nine at the break, and South Florida pulled away with a 7-0 run to start the second half. Marquette only shot 29-percent, but the Bulls were not much better at 33-percent. The Eagles committed 24 turnovers to just 13 for South Florida. The Bulls improved to 6-and-7 in the Big East and 14-and-13 overall. Arlesia Morse had 20 points and four steals, and Katherine Plouffe had 12 rebounds for Marquette, which fell to 4-and-8 in the conference and 13-and-12 overall. The Eagles have dropped six-of-their-last-seven. They’ll play at Syracuse on Saturday.
Concordia-Mequon won its third straight men’s basketball title in the N-A-C’s North Division, with a 69-to-66 home victory over second-place Madison Edgewood. Concordia trailed by one at the half, but it went on a 12-0 run late in the second half in which Mitchell Schneider scored eight straight points. He had 18 on the night, as Concordia-Mequon closed out its regular season conference schedule at 14-and-2. Ben Wisniewski scored 27 for Madison Edgewood, which tied for second with Lakeland at 12-and-4. Lakeland closed out its regular conference season with a 96-to-74 romp of Wisconsin Lutheran. Benedictine and Concordia-Chicago tied for the South Division crown at 10-and-6.
There were almost no surprises last night as the boys’ state high school hockey regionals got underway. Three teams seeded lower than their opponents pulled off mild upsets – and in each case, a Number-nine seed prevailed over a Number-eight. Tomah, Germantown, and De Pere-West De Pere scored those victories. Twenty-three higher seeds moved on. Mosinee won the most lop-sided game of the night, 15-to-2 over Merrill. Waunakee also scored 15 times in a 12-goal victory over DeForest. None of the eight top-seeds played, as 38 teams received byes to tomorrow night’s second round. That included last year’s state champion, Wausau West. Sixty-four teams are still alive for tomorrow night’s regional finals.
The Milwaukee Admirals broke their longest home losing streak in 13 years with a 3-to-nothing victory over Houston last night. The Admirals ended five straight losses at the Bradley Center. Goal-tender Jeremy Smith had 23 saves, including 13 in the third period, to get his second shutout of the season. Smith ended a personal six-game losing streak. Chris Mueller, Joel Champagne, and Jonathon Blum scored for Milwaukee, which won its first home contest since January 14th.
The U-W Madison Athletic Board will be asked on Friday to adopt variable pricing for any Badger single-game football tickets that might become available this season. Season-ticket holders would continue to pay 42-dollars for all games. But if tickets become available for Michigan, Ohio State, or Minnesota, they’d go for 65-dollars. The Badgers want to charge 55-dollars for Illinois, and 45 for Northern Iowa, Utah State, and Texas El-Paso. Wisconsin would join eight other Big Ten schools that have variable pricing for football. The U-W finance committee endorsed the variable price hikes yesterday. They also recommended a price hike for Badger men’s basketball tickets, but only in the lower level. Season tickets would rise from 24-dollars a game to 28, and single-game tickets would go up from 26-dollars to 30.
Former Milwaukee Brewers’ manager Ned Yost will apparently stay at Kansas City for awhile. The Royals have picked up a one-year option on Yost’s contract, and they’ll keep paying him through 2013. Yost was named as K-C’s skipper in May of 2010, replacing the fired Trey Hillman. Two months later, Yost was given a contract extension through 2012 with a team option for ’13. Yost has led the Royals to a record of 126-and-163 – including a 71-and-91 mark last season. He managed the Brewers from 2003 until September of ’08, when he was fired with just 12 games left in the regular season as Milwaukee stumbled before getting its first playoff bid since 1982.
