    State’s graduation rate is up

Posted in: News | Comments Off

WHEELER –  Wisconsin’s high school graduation rate went above 90-percent in the last school year. The Department of Public Instruction said yesterday that 90-and-a-half percent of students received their diplomas in 2011. That’s up from 89-point-nine percent in 2010, and 89-point-four percent the previous year. Native Americans were the only ethnic-or-racial group to have a decrease, with a graduation rate of 77-point-four percent – down more than one-percent from 2010. White students had the highest graduation rate at over 94-percent. Blacks had the lowest rate at 69-point-seven – but that was almost three-percent higher than the year before.

    Walker up in polls

Posted in: News | Comments Off

WHEELER  - Three recent polls give Governor Scott Walker a five-to-six-point lead over his recall challenger Tom Barrett. And that’s got Democrats turning up the heat about the John Doe investigation into Walker’s former aides when he was the Milwaukee County executive. Walker has said he’s not a target of the probe, and he was not involved at all with the embezzlement and illegal campaigning charges filed so far against five former aides and associates. But Democrats are apparently trying to create doubt in the minds of the relatively small number of undecided voters for the June fifth recall contest. State Democratic Party attorney Jeremy Levinson says the Republican Walker needs to explain why he created a legal defense fund – which, by law, is only allowed for officials under investigation for ethics-and-election law violations. Levinson says people deserve answers before they enter the voting booth. But former G-O-P adviser Brandon Scholz tells the A-P that Democrats have run out of issues, and they’re just trying to put Walker’s camp on the defense. And he said the governor has nothing to gain by responding. As for the polls, Walker has taken a 50-to-44 percent lead among likely voters in the Marquette Law School survey. Polls by Rasmussen and Public Policy Polling both give Walker a 50-to-45 edge. And the Marquette poll said more Republicans than Democrats definitely plan to vote on June fifth – an important point in a contest where both sides agree that turnout will be a huge factor.

Rusk County (WQOW) - There are concerns about a young bear in Rusk County.

A plastic container is stuck on its head.  The animal was first spotted a week ago.  Everyone is worried the bear hasn’t been able to eat or drink anything because of the container.  The DNR is concerned the bear could get dehydrated so it set two traps in Rusk County in hopes of catching the animal to free it from the container. The bear is with a sow and a cub.  The DNR wants people to avoid all three.

    Jobs report out today

Posted in: News | Comments Off

WHEELER – Wisconsin’s monthly report on jobs is due out today – and it’s expected to contain bad news that Governor Scott Walker’s administration has spent all week downplaying. Milwaukee Wells Fargo economist Brian Jacobson expects disappointing numbers after the national jobs report produced weaker trends in April. Walker’s people have already said that today’s report would show a loss of almost 34-thousand private-and-public jobs over the past year. The Republican governor has questioned the validity of the figure, saying it was based on incomplete monthly surveys. And on Tuesday, his administration trotted out a more complete survey of employers which showed that Wisconsin actually gained 23-thousand jobs during Walker’s first year in office in 2011. Walker touted that number in his campaign ads leading up to his recall election in 19 days. And the state Democratic Party filed a complaint about that yesterday. The Democrats told the Dane County district attorney and the state elections’ agency that Walker illegally used state time and resources to craft what it called a political message. Ciara Matthews of the Walker campaign says the Democrats have it all wrong. She said Walker filmed the ad before the exact final job numbers were known. Matthews said the final version of the ad was completed yesterday morning, and was sent electronically to T-V stations and cable outlets.

Saint Thomas 5, Saint Norbert 1
Saint Scholastica 8, North Park 7
    Aurora 2, U-W La Crosse 1

The Houston Astros scored seven runs in the first four innings last night, as they crushed the Milwaukee Brewers 8-to-3 at Minute Maid Park. Brewers’ starter Randy Wolf was pulled after those four innings, giving up six earned runs on seven hits with three walks and a strikeout. The loss dropped Wolf to 2-and-4, while boosting his E-R-A to six-point-three-eight. It also ended a string of seven quality starts by Milwaukee pitchers. Astros’ starter Bud Norris kept the Brewers’ offense in check. He struck out nine in seven innings, while giving up just a run on four hits with a pair of walks. Norris improved to 4-and-1. Ex-Brewer Carlos Lee went 3-for-4 with a solo homer, as Houston ended six straight home losses to Milwaukee while snapping a four-game losing streak overall. Corey Hart belted a solo homer, and pinch-hitter Jonathan Lucroy hit a two-run triple for the Brewers’ only offense. The Astros out-hit the Crew 8-5. Milwaukee has lost three-of-its-last-four, and is now 7-and-12 on the road this season. The Brewers and Astros are tied for second-to-last in the National League Central, both at 16-and-21, a game ahead of the cellar-dwelling Cubs. Milwaukee will wrap up its two-game series at Houston tonight. Right-hander Shaun Marcum faces Astros’ southpaw J-A Happ.

The Brewers say they have no plans to use right-hander Claudio Vargas at the Major League level. The team signed the 33-year-old veteran to a minor-league deal yesterday. Vargas had two stints with Milwaukee between 2007-and-2010. But assistant general manager Gord Ash says the Brewers are only interested in using him at Triple-“A” Nashville, where they need to beef up the rotation. Seven pitchers have started games for the Sounds this year, and only three of them are considered to be prospects. They are Mark Rogers, Wily Peralta, and Mike Fiers, who have a combined record 2-and-7. Vargas had planned to retire before signing with a team in Mexico at the start of this season. He’s 48-and-40 in eight Major League seasons, with a career E-R-A of four-point-eight-three.

Former Brewers’ prospect Brett Lawrie of Toronto was given a four-game suspension by Major League Baseball yesterday, which he appealed. Lawrie was also slapped with an undisclosed fine, for spiking his helmet toward plate umpire Bill Miller on Tuesday night. The 22-year-old Blue Jays’ third baseman got upset when Miller called strikes on two pitches that replays showed were clearly off the plate. It happened during the ninth inning of a Toronto loss to Tampa Bay. After Lawrie struck out, he argued with Miller – and he then bounced his helmet near the plate, and it struck Miller in the hip. Baseball disciplinarian Joe Torre said the actions were clearly aggressive – but he told C-B-S Sports he didn’t believe Lawrie intentionally tried to hit the umpire with the helmet. The Brewers traded him to the Blue Jays about a year-and-a-half ago for starter Shaun Marcum. His appeal allows Lawrie to keep playing until he can get to New York to challenge Torre’s decision. Lawrie went 1-for-4 last night in an 8-to-1 Blue Jays’ home win over the Yankees.

Only one of Wisconsin’s three teams were victorious yesterday in their opening games of the N-C-A-A Division-Three baseball regional at Whitewater. The host Warhawks defeated Concordia-Chicago 2-to-1 in 10 innings on a walk-off single by Matt Beyer. Saint Norbert College lost its opener to Saint Thomas, 5-to-1. Bryce Gapinski and Saint Norbert’s Kevin Nutley both pitched complete games, throwing over 100 pitches each. Last night, U-W La Crosse lost to Aurora, 2-to-1. Josh Davidson had the game-winning hit in the second-inning with a two-run single. Today, Saint Norbert faces possible elimination when it plays Concordia-Chicago. La Crosse has an elimination game against North Park, which lost to Saint Scholastica yesterday 8-to-7. And Whitewater will play Saint Thomas in the winner’s bracket. The double-elimination tournament continues at least until Saturday.

Both Wisconsin teams missed the cut yesterday at the N-C-A-A Division-Three men’s golf tournament. Madison Edgewood was sent home after being in 32nd place at the halfway point of the four-round competition. Edgewood was at 66-over-par, while Carroll of Waukesha was at plus-74 in 36th place. Only 15-of-the-41 teams will play the third-and-fourth rounds today and tomorrow at Howey-in-the-Hills Florida. Oglethorpe was the second-round leader at one-over. Kenny Rucker was Edgewood’s top player. He was at 158 after 36 holes, in a tie for 114th among the individuals. Sam Luedtke was Carroll’s top player. He was at 159, tied for 124th.

Jim Schuman of Verona will go for his second straight Wisconsin P-G-A Match Play title today. Schuman will go up against Foy Swenson of Oconomowoc in the final match on the Straits course at Whistling Straits near Sheboygan. Schuman advanced by eliminating David Kemnitz of Plymouth 5-and-4 in yesterday afternoon’s semi-finals on the Irish Course at Whistling Straits. Swenson scored a one-up victory over Craig Czerniejewski of Watertown in their semi-final.

Three players signed national letters-of-intent yesterday to join the U-W Milwaukee men’s basketball team this fall. They are junior college transfers Jordan Aaron and Thierno Niang, and Louisiana high school player Donald Thomas. Aaron, who’s 5-11, averaged 14 points and four assists for Southeastern Community College in Iowa last fall. But he was among 10 players who violated team rules, and their season was canceled last December. Niang, who’s 6-1, is a native of Senegal. He averaged eight points and five rebounds for Triton College of Illinois last season. Thomas was an All-Louisiana second pick last spring. He went to Riverside Academy near New Orleans. Niang and Aaron will help re-stock a Milwaukee backcourt which lost point guard Kaylon Williams. Thomas, a forward, is expected to produce more speed in the front-court for the Panthers.

Siverling named head Mens BB coach at UW-Eau Claire

Posted in: Sports | Comments Off

Matt Siverling has been selected as head coach of the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire men’s basketball team, Director of Athletics Scott Kilgallon announced Wednesday.

Members of the media and community are invited to a press conference at 3 p.m. Monday, May 21, in the McPhee Physical Education Center.

“While we had a strong pool of applicants and brought four very good finalists to campus, we feel that Matt is the best fit to successfully lead the Blugolds,” Kilgallon said.

Siverling becomes just the 10th coach in Blugold men’s basketball history. The position came open following the departure of Kyle Green after he served one year as head coach. During the 2011-12 season, Green guided the Blugolds to a 15-10 overall and 7-9 conference record, narrowly missing the conference tournament.

“I am truly honored and humbled to be the new head men’s basketball coach at UW-Eau Claire,” Siverling said. “This is an excellent opportunity, and I am extremely excited to once again be part of this outstanding university and the Blugold Athletics program.”

Siverling has previous experience with the Blugolds, serving as an assistant for the men’s basketball team from 2004-07 and also as an assistant men’s and women’s golf coach for two seasons (2004-05). He was also an associate lecturer in the Kinesiology Department from 2004-07. A 2002 graduate of UW-Eau Claire, Siverling began his coaching career as an assistant for the Eau Claire North High School boy’s basketball team while he was an undergrad.

After finishing his undergrad work at UW-Eau Claire, Siverling attended the University of Florida to earn his Master’s Degree, which he received in 2004. During his time in Florida, he was as a graduate assistant for the men’s basketball team before coming back to Eau Claire after graduation.

Following his three-year stint as an assistant with the Blugolds, Siverling left to serve three seasons as a program specialist at the University of Arkansas, an NCAA Division I school in Fayetteville, Arkansas.

Most recently, Siverling served as head men’s basketball coach at UW-Superior for the last two seasons. With the Yellowjackets, Siverling led the team two straight WIAC Tournament appearances and during the 2011-12 season coached them to an 8-8 conference record, their best WIAC mark since the 2000-01 season. Over the past two years, Siverling has compiled a 29-24 overall and 14-18 conference record.

A Ladysmith native, Siverling is married to Lori, who is also a UW-Eau Claire graduate. He and his wife currently have two daughters, Addison (5) and Brayln (4). They are expecting their third child in the fall. Siverling will begin his head coaching duties at UW-Eau Claire on August 20.

Ethanol saves money at the pump

Posted in: News | Comments Off

WHEELER – If it wasn’t for ethanol, a new study suggests that we might be paying a lot more for gasoline today. Researchers at U-W Madison and Iowa State said the blending of ethanol into gasoline saved motorists an average of a-dollar-nine per gallon in 2011 – up from 89-cents the previous year. And Josh Morby of the Wisconsin Bio-Industry Alliance said the savings were even bigger in the Badger State, which has nine large corn-based ethanol plants. He said Wisconsinites paid 1.69 less than they otherwise would have. The Alliance said ethanol’s a lot cheaper than pure gasoline – and the inclusion of 13 billion gallons of ethanol into the nation’s gasoline pool drove gas prices way down. The study said regular unleaded averaged 3.52-a-gallon last year, but it would have been 4.60 without the ethanol. But energy economist James Williams questions these numbers. Williams is a Wausau native who owns W-T-R-G Economics of Arkansas – and he says the numbers don’t take the energy content of gas and ethanol into account. He tells the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that the two fuels cost about the same, once their energy contents are figured in. Wisconsin is the nation’s seventh-largest ethanol producer. The Renewable Fuels Association, an industry trade group, supplied funding for the universities’ study.
